2004 Annual Report
FIREARMS TRAINING PROGRAM
FIREARMS TRAINING – 2004:
In 2004 the Wood County Sheriff's Department held 36 range sessions. This included:
Armors Inspection
Low Light/Gas Mask
Rapid Response to Active Shooter
Rifle Block
Tactical
Less Lethal
Decision Making
Shotgun
This year we incorporated Defense and Arrest Tactics with range training. This has given us a more efficient use of the training time allotted, as well as eliminating the need to get this required training from an outside source.
Specialized range training for the Special Response Team includes M-16 rifle, MP-5 subgun, 37mm gas gun, and gas and noise/flash diversionary device. Much of this training is accomplished at our existing range.
Deputies are becoming more familiar with the M16 rifles. Those rifles are now in marked squad cars for rapid deployment. This should help get firepower on the scene of a catastrophic incident quickly, should the need arise.
We continued the concept in Realistic/Decision Making Situation Training. This is live interactive training that took place in a mobile home in Pittsville. This is the most practical and cost effective training for decision-making. It is also very stressful and realistic.
The Wood County Sheriff's Department Reserve Deputies are included in our training program. Due to a large turnover of Reserves, this requires additional block training to bring them up to our standard. Mike Christensen is doing a good job in organizing and supervising this program.
We still have an agreement with the Marshfield National Guard Armory to utilize their indoor facility during the winter months. They do charge a minimal fee per hour of use.
