February 1998
Winter is always cold and snowy, right? So in February we look for some indoor comforts, like the barracks at Volk Airfield. We usually try to take in some of the sights around the airfield and then do an afternoon of tubing on the west side of Fort McCoy. Well, this year there was no snow anywhere.
The boys usually have brought along plenty of games to work on.
The biggest problem is getting the lights turned off later at night.
We hit a lucky weekend.
A C130 crew had too many hours in on Friday and had stayed over night at the field.
So Saturday morning while they were getting ready to move out,
we got to take a look inside the plane.
And since they we there, the airfield was open.
And since the airfield was open,
a few of the Guard from Madison flew up to get some hours in too.
And what do they do when they get there, they showed off for us.
We also got to see the fire house with a water pumper truck demo,
and the Top Gun presentation with wire-CAD displays.
We called the tubing hill and found it was open (remember, no snow).
They make there own snow each night.
The bottom of the hill was a little wet and muddy, but the hill was fine.
The hill on the left in the picture is the tubing hill.
