Amy Sue Vruwink Calls for Quick Approval of Hunting & Fishing Rights Amendment
Amy Sue Vruwink, a candidate for the State Assembly in the 70th Assembly District, today called for quick legislative approval of the proposed constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to hunt and fish. Vruwink joined with other state Democratic legislators and candidates to pledge that will put the constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to hunt and fish on the fast track in next year's legislative session.
“Hunting and fishing are a valued part of Wisconsin's outdoor tradition, but we can't take them for granted. The right to hunt and fish deserves the strongest legal protection possible, and that's why I join with Assembly and Senate Democratic legislators in pledging to make this constitutional amendment a top priority if I am elected,” said Vruwink.
The Legislature has approved the amendment, which was co-sponsored by 14 Democrats and 13 Republicans, but it must also be endorsed by the next legislature before it can be submitted to the voters for final adoption in a statewide referendum.
Amy Sue Vruwink expressed concern that the amendment might be delayed for political reasons next year. It could be placed on the ballot as early as April 2003 if the Legislature acts quickly. However, some Republicans have talked about putting off the referendum until November 2004.
“Two years is too long to wait. The amendment can, and should, become a part of our constitution by next April. The right to hunt and fish has overwhelming support with voters and legislators, and there is no reason to delay,” Vruwink said.
Amy Sue Vruwink said she is glad that “Assembly Democrats have put the hunting and fishing amendment at the top of their agenda so that it can be approved in the April 2003 spring election. Hunting and fishing rights are too important to be delayed for political purposes. That is why I support the plan to approve this amendment as quickly as possible, and put the protection of our hunting and fishing heritage in the hands of Wisconsin voters.”
Assembly Democratic leaders and legislators have held a series of press conferences across Wisconsin to announce their intention to bring up and pass the constitutional amendment in January of 2003. The amendment must be passed quickly by the Legislature in order to allow it to be placed before the voters in April of 2003 for their approval.
