July 1997
While the older boys were on the Boundary Waters trip, the rest of the troop went on a weekend Pioneering campout. One of the many projects they worked on was a Zip Line. The Rock Pile is a Scout property located south of Marshfield near Lindsey.
Each year the older boys in the troop get to go on a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness trip. This year it was the far end of the Gunflint Trail. From there we headed west along the border and spent part of a day in Canada. We started on Saganaga Lake along the Canadian border, ended up on Kekekabic Lake at our farthest in point, and returned through Seagull Lake. The total trip covered about 53 miles in 8 days with 2 days of non-travel.
When we reach a campsite and have everything set up,
it is time to fish, swim, and do nothing.
Here a few of the boys are trying to see how far out they can walk
in the shallow backwater where we had docked our canoes.
When you prepare your food, it's nice to have a flat surface to use for a kitchen table.
Well, it turns out that the bottom side of our canoes work out just fine for a table.
A typical day on the water is spent paddling and portaging,
the best of which is the crusing part.
The water can be narrow and shallow to deep and wide.
Certain times of the day you get treated to views like this one.
After we cross a large lake and regroup at the far end,
we set course for the next gap.
This time we hope to find an empty camp site just around the next island.
While the adults take a siesta under the tree (it was a long day),
the boys still have the energy for another swim.
