Cycling Merit Badge

The Cycling Merit Badge is not something we do every year. It had been four years since we had done one last in our troop, so we took the time to put one on again. Amoung other things, the boys need to go on 6 rides of 25 miles and then plan and go on a 50 mile event. This time for the 50 we camped at Wildcat Mt. State Park south of the Sparta-Elroy State Trail.

We started the season with a bicycle check-out and a short 12 mile ride around town. Each time we would meet somewhere, most times in Marshfield, and end up back in Marshfield. One trip we went to the Red Cedar State Trail to do a 25 miler.

Our 50 miler started in Camp Douglas at the start of the Omaha Trail. This trail goes south to Elroy and has one tunnel on it. From there we traveled some local roads and then took the Sparta-Elroy State Trail to Sparta. We needed 6 more miles after that and so continued on to La Crosse and ended in Rockton.

The mid-day break was in Kendall with food and a siesta. It gave us time to regroup and check things over.

After it was all over and we had a good nights rest, we took in some of the sights of Wildcat Mt. State Park.
