Almosta
Ranch is located southwest of Marshfield, Wisconsin. Almosta Ranch is
the home of the Maple Store and is comprised of 95 acres of beautiful
Wisconsin rolling land. The property is comprised of 20 acres of farmland,
20 acres of sugar bush with sugar and soft (red) maple trees, low land,
high land and an approximate 1 1/2 acre garden plot. The Yellow River
snakes around the property.Over 3 miles of groomed trails follow the Yellow River to and from the homestead. This 95-acre parcel of land has been in the family over 60 years. All of the agricultural land was cleared and the land “broken” with a single bottom breaker plow and 2 horses. The land was fenced 55 years ago, long before trails were available to transport fencing material. The work was done using 2 horses and a stone boat from the home farm 1 1/2 miles away. We have fond memories of my father raising honeybees. He was also the local collector of wild swarms of honeybees. Neighbors would call and my father would go to the area, pick out the queen bee of the swarm (bees leave the swarm if there is more than one queen bee in the hive). He would place the queen on a blanket and all the worker bees would follow onto the blanket. Dad would then bring the corners of the blanket together to the center, take them home and place the bees in a new home (hive).
Wildlife is abundant on the Ranch and includes white tail deer, otter,
cranes, wild turkeys, bald eagles, foxes, rabbits, beavers and snapping
turtles. Almosta Ranch also has red raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries,
gooseberries and elderberries growing wild. These wild berries have been
collected since I was a child. My siblings and I picked approximately
100 quarts of red raspberries every summer that my mother canned as sauce
for the winter months. We purchased the Almosta Ranch land from my mother in 1989. The buildings were erected using lumber from the ranch. Since that time four thousand pine trees have been planted, additional trails have been developed and we have worked with experts to ensure a healthy and long-lived forest ecology. |

Farm
Market We are nestled along the Yellow River with our gardens enclosed and protected by our maple sugar bush. Our harvests begin in March with maple syrup season and continue throughout the summer and fall. We harvest many varieties of delicious garden vegetables, as well as, domestic and wild fruits and berries. We ensure our produce is at its peak by picking right before farm market each day. Also, look for our delicious syrup, jams and jellies available singly or in gift baskets!
